HISTORY OF THE NEWSWIRE PHOTOS
This image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection which represents one of America’s earliest news picture agencies. The collection richly documents sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, political activities including the woman suffrage campaign, conventions and public celebrations. The photographs Bain produced and gathered for distribution through his news service were worldwide in their coverage, but there was a special emphasis on life in New York City. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1900s to the mid-1920s, but scattered images can be found as early as the 1860s and as late as the 1930s. (Library of Congress)

Mac (1993)
From The New Yorker
The actor John Turturro makes his début as a director with “Mac.” The first inkling that this might not be a carnival of laughs comes in the opening credits, when somebody scrapes the title into the ground with a stick. Set in Queens in the fifties, this is solemn, impassioned, brow-furrowing stuff, the kind of movie that makes you put aside your popcorn in shame. The story is set in the construction industry, and set pretty firm; no audience is going to feel too frisky with this much concrete around. Turturro stars as Mac, one of three brothers (the others are played by Michael Badalucco and Carl Capotorto) who inherit their father’s business and fall out just as they begin to flourish. The film is a hymn to hard work and fine workmanship, which is fine, except that it whacks you over the head with its elegy for better times: “Today it’s the man who can talk,” moans Mac. “Then it was the man who could do.” In pushing himself to the forefront of a movie, Turturro seems to have left something behind, the vulnerable good temper that bore him through “Barton Fink” and “Do the Right Thing.” His sweetness has turned sour, and the movie follows suit; it feels grouchy and joyless. Things improve briefly when Ellen Barkin shows up as a kooky artist’s model, and writhes naked in a pile of sliced bread; but Turturro soon leaves her stranded. He thinks he has better, more worthy things to do with his film. It’s hard to agree. -Anthony Lane

Born to be mild? Amos Lee’s sophomore effort for Blue Note follows firmly in the gentle guitar strums of his well-received 2005 debut and opening slots for Norah Jones and Bob Dylan. Little has changed the second time around, which will come as a relief to those enthralled by his first release. He remains a sensitive sort, mixing his insightful, reflective lyrics with lovely, unforced melodies played by backing musicians that stay on low boil. These tunes go down as smoothly as hot chocolate on a cold day, yet Lee brings an unassuming sincerity to the proceedings with his cozy, amiable voice. Comparisons to Bill Withers and James Taylor are accurate if inevitable, but when the gospel organ quivers into “Skipping Stone,” it’s clear Lee isn’t stuck in a folk-pop rut.
Lee’s approach is similar to the way Keb’ Mo’ treats the blues–he injects his cushy personality into an established genre, writes good if somewhat casual songs, and doesn’t push the envelope too far. The final third of the album is perhaps too mellow, and a few midtempo tracks could have perked things up. But adult-contemporary fans looking for dependable Sunday morning music will welcome Supply and Demand as a quality follow-up brimming with subtle soul, style, and sophistication. –Hal Horowitz

The Cookie Never Crumbles: Practical Recipes for Everyday Living (Paperback)
Amazon.com Review
How many times has someone tried to console you by saying, “That’s the way the cookie crumbles”? The message implies that whatever we were hoping for was destined to crumble and fall apart. “Well, that logic just doesn’t hold water,” claims Wally Amos, author of The Cookie Never Crumbles. “It totally slanders the nature of the cookie. When the cookie breaks apart, you don’t lose that cookie, you get lots of little cookies.” Amos excels at this sort of optimistic, kitchen-table wisdom, as evidenced by the success of his previous book, The Famous Amos Story, which tells the story of building his cookie empire. (Although it’s probably safe to assume that cowriter Eden-Lee Murray has perfected the cozy style of writing.) Written in a cookbook format, the narrative often crumbles into clichés. In his opening chapter, “Essential Ingredients for Your Personal Pantry,” he includes the “Basics,” such as “Honesty, Integrity, Positive Loving Attitude….” Yet his “Recipe for Recovery” is a poignant observation on how to rebuild after disaster strikes. Like the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, this is a spiritually safe book–nondenominational, inoffensive, and full of tasty, inspirational morsels. There are even a few real cookie recipes, such as “Classic Chocolate Chip and Pecan Cookies and “Courage Coconut Cookies.” –Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
A fifth book from the founder of the famous cookie company, this collection of cheerful vignettes presents approaches to life’s challenges in a series of “recipes” for success (e.g., “Humble Pie I: Know When to Fish, and When to Cut Bait”), drawing on ingredients such as experience, appreciation, perseverance and faith, as well as on philosophical traditions (in chapters titled “The Tao of the Cookie,” “The Karma of the Cookie”). Amos (The Famous Amos Story) is relentlessly optimistic about overcoming everyday obstacles and enthusiastic about sharing with others the strategies that have worked for him. While each “recipe” can stand alone, a narrative strand runs through the book outlining Amos’s successes and failures in business and in life, though unfortunately these biographical details can be distractingly repetitive. Amos, with author Murray, manages to salvage an inspirational lesson from every setback and tries to show how the reader can use his formulas to achieve the same results (“expect lumps… but whether a lump is flour or sugar, it’s still part of the batter of Life!”). He makes frequent references to religious faith as a staple ingredient, though escapes an overt religious didacticism that might be off-putting to some. Offering general business wisdom, lessons for personal life, an introduction by Neale Donald Walsch and a few actual cookie recipes at the end, Amos serves up a little lite wisdom for everyone. (Oct. 5)Forecast: Standing squarely on the shoulders of pan-inspirational giants like Robert Fulghum’s All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten and Jack Canfield’s Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and with a national author tour and radio campaign, this book will find a ready-made initial audience.
